New workstation

By Gear

I finally made the step and built a serious workstation PC. I’ve been wanting to do this for over a year, since I realised my 15” MacBook Pro couldn’t handle all the heavy task of my work, and my ambitions for 3D rendering.

I’ve been interested in GPU rendering ever since I became really passionate about 3D, and saw just how much faster GPU render engines are compared to the “normal” CPU rendering. So the components I chose for this computer was based around getting some really high-performance GPU action.

At the heart of this build I have 2 Maxwell Titan Xs and a GTX 980 ti, which I’ll be doing all the heavy lifting along with the CPU of course. And all other components like the motherboard and PSU have been selected to be able to support the 3 GPU’s with plans for a 4th one in the near future.

After first playing around with the Redshift3D demo, I quickly bought a licence for the full version, when I saw just how ridiculously fast rendering was on this beast. After being used to CPU rendering with Mental Ray on an Apple laptop, I can safely say the change is night and day.
